FBI seeks Anchorage bank robber

Anchorage police and federal agents are looking for a man who robbed a credit union branch inside a Spenard supermarket Monday morning, according to the FBI.

The as-yet unidentified man approached a teller at the Alaska USA branch inside the Aurora Village Carrs store, at 1650 W. Northern Lights Blvd., about 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to a written statement from the FBI's Anchorage office.

"As the subject arrived at the teller station, he removed his gloves and verbally demanded money while gesturing and pointing with his hands," the statement says.

Assistant Special Agent Kevin Donovan said the man made a threat during the robbery, but Donovan would not say if the man had a weapon.

The teller gave the man some money -- the FBI is not saying how much -- and put it into a white plastic grocery bag that had been stuffed up his coat sleeve, according to the FBI. He then fled out a nearby store entrance that goes through a Carrs tobacco shop, the FBI said.

The suspected bank robber is described as in his 40s and about 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He had brown-and-gray hair, with either light stubble or no facial hair, and was wearing dark shoes, khaki pants, black gloves and a black puffy coat, the FBI statement says. The man also wore sunglasses with "iridescent" tinted lenses and thick black-and-red plastic frames and a black baseball-style cap with white lettering on the front, the statement says.

Authorities investigating the bank robbery ask that anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts call the FBI at 276-4441 or the Anchorage police at 786-8500.

The last two bank robberies in Anchorage investigated by the FBI were at a Credit Union One on Abbott Road Feb. 25 and an Alaska USA branch on West Dimond Boulevard March 1. The FBI announced March 11 that agents had arrested a man, 25-year-old Cameron Fergerson, for both robberies. Fergerson remains in custody, according to court records.
