A male pedestrian was critically injured when he was struck by a car in a Midtown parking lot Monday night, police said.

The incident, which occurred in a parking lot near 24th Avenue and Eagle Street, was reported about 7:30 p.m., according to Anchorage police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

"From what we understand, it was the vehicle that was backing out and the pedestrian was either seated or lying down behind the vehicle," Castro said.

The pedestrian, described as a man in his late 30s, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Castro said. The driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with police, and has not been charged, Castro said.

Police are investigating the incident, including whether alcohol or other substances were involved, Castro said.

NOTE: Police earlier incorrectly reported that the incident occurred at 12th Avenue and Eagle Street in Fairview.
