No snowmachines allowed in Denali State Park starting next week

A dose of warm weather and a deteriorating snowpack prompted officials to announce Tuesday that Denali State Park will be closed to snowmachine use starting next week.

The closing date, Monday, April 28, falls near the typical end of the snowmachine season, said Teri Zell, an administrative officer with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. "Usually it's about anywhere between the third week in April to the first week in May," she said.

Trails opened to snowmachine use on Nov. 25 last year. Zell described current trail conditions as "soft and punchy" as daytime temperatures hover in the high 40s.
