In his April 21 article titled “Native language bill passes overwhelmingly after protest in Capitol,” reporter Richard Mauer wrote the following about Senator Lesil McGuire: “As the demonstration was gathering steam, she walked out of the her office in a bright yellow dress. …” I was struck by how much the story was improved by a description of the Senator’s attire, and I wondered when was the last time Mr. Mauer wrote about a male legislator’s outfit.
But then I thought, well, no harm done, but perhaps in tandem with its new ownership the ADN should enact a new editorial policy guiding its reporters toward descriptions of the male legislators’ fashion statements as well, including photos. Because that, my fellow Alaskans, would be real comedy.
