The AHL's Abbotsford Heat, affiliate of the Alaska Aces, endured a tough Calder Cup playoff opener tonight -- they fell 2-1 to the Grand Rapids Griffins in the final minute of the second overtime.
Grand Rapids defenseman Ryan Sproul scored with 34 seconds left in double OT (former Aces defenseman Kane Lafranchise, one of the good guys, was on the ice for Abbotsford, which hosts Game 2 Saturday in the best-of-5 series).
Former Aces goaltender Joni Ortio stopped 39 shots for the Heat. Griffins goalie Petr Mrazek made 55 saves in a game that nearly lasted 100 minutes.
