Weekend picks: Heart Run, Native Youth Olympics, 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'

Thousands set to race in 36th Heart Run on Saturday at UAA

The 36th running of one of the largest 5-K races in Alaska will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday starting -- and finishing -- at the University of Alaska Anchorage Fine Arts Building. Registration for the timed run ended on Friday, but you can still sign up for the untimed run (or walk) at the starting line on Saturday morning. Proceeds benefit the local American Heart Association. Go online to heartrun.kintera.org and see how much they're raising.

'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' ends Sunday

Perseverance Theatre wraps up its Anchorage run of Tennessee Williams' steamy classic with a final performance at 4 p.m. Sunday in Sydney Laurence Theatre. Daily News reviewer Egan Millard gives high marks to the pent-up tension and aggression that bristles through the entire play, with superb casting and excellent, insightful direction. (Note, the second to last show is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.)

Native Youth games scheduled to wrap up

Athletes from across the state continue competing in the 44th Native Youth Olympics on Saturday at the Dena'ina Center downtown Anchorage. The Indian Stick Pull, One-foot High Kick and the Seal Hop are on the schedule.
