A pair of UAA tracksters were in first place Monday after the first day of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference multi-event championships in Washington state.
Junior Cody Thomas won four of five events and leads the decathlon while sophomore Karolin Anders leads the heptathlon after four events.
With 3,742 points, Thomas has a 484-point lead over Central Washington's Justin Peterson. He ran a hand-held time of 10.8 seconds to win the 100-meter dash and his leap of 22 feet, 4.5 inches was the top long jump.
Thomas also placed first in shot put with a personal-best heave of 37 feet, 10.5 inches, and won the 400 in 49.7 seconds.
The only event Thomas didn't win was the high jump. He took second after clearing 6 feet, 3.25 inches.
Anders scored 3,031 points and has a 79-point lead over Central Washington's Tayler Fettig, who set a meet record of 5 feet, 8 inches in high jump. Anders took first in shot put with a toss of 36 feet.
UAA sophomore Rosie Smith won the other two events in her heptathlon debut. She clocked winning, hand-held times of 14.2 seconds in the 100 hurdles and 25.4 seconds in the 200.
Smith is in third place with 2,778 points. The two-day event continues Tuesday.
