Alaska women win Pacific Northwest chorus championship for 4th time

Mike Dunham

Alaska Sound Celebration, an 80-member women's a cappella chorus, won its fourth regional championship at the Sweet Adelines International competition April 12 in Spokane, Wash. They prevailed over 22 other barbershop-style groups from the Pacific Northwest.

The Alaska chorus will now prepare to compete in the International Competition in Las Vegas in October 2015. They will contend against 30 other groups hailing from Sweden to Australia.

After the last International Competition, in Honolulu in November, the chorus was ranked 14th among the 600 or so Sweet Adeline chapters around the world.

Membership in the chorus -- which includes business, medical and education professionals living in the Anchorage area -- ranges from age 16 to 77. The group is well-known in Alaska for putting on the Rondy Melodrama, an annual sellout at the winter Fur Rendezvous celebration. They meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Wayland Baptist University, 7801 E. 32nd Ave. (off Muldoon Road).
