Arts scene: Alaska Youth Orchestras, First Friday, 'The Fox on the Fairway'

Youth orchestras

The Alaska Youth Orchestras will perform their final concert of the 2013-2014 season at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Discovery Theatre. Eunice Kang, concertmaster of the Anchorage Youth Symphony, will be the featured soloist in Saint-Saen's Violin Concerto No. 3. The "L'Arlesienne Suite" by Bizet and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 are also on the program. Tickets are available at centertix.net.

Northern views

"Wild Alaska," a solo exhibit by painter Robert Winfree, will open with a reception at 5 p.m. Friday at the new Ship Creek location of Alaska Geographic, 241 North C St. (next to the Ulu Factory). Winfree is a scientist whose work captures the natural and cultural heritage of Alaska's public lands. The self-taught artist's acrylics have appeared in several juried exhibits and picked up awards.

Wax works

Encaustic paintings by Susan Delgalvis are on display at blue.hollomon gallery, 36th and Arctic. The medium uses resin, pigment and beeswax. Delgalvis says the exhibit, "Introspection," "is a reflection of my thoughts, feelings and life experiences. ... After building up the surface, I 'look within' the painting to reveal what I perceive to be the simplicity of nature, separated into basic elements and coming together in a unified image." The opening reception starts at 5 p.m. Friday.

The UAA Department of Music will present a recital by pianist Natsuki Fukasawa at 7 p.m. Friday in the UAA Recital Hall. The program includes an early Beethoven sonata (the "Moonlight") and a late one, plus work by Chopin, Rachmaninoff and the largely-forgotten (because it's so hard to play) music of Leopold Godowsky, one of the most formidable pianists of the last century. Tickets are available at uaatix.com.

Fore!

"The Fox on the Fairway" is comedic master Ken Ludwig's salute to those obsessed with the pastime of golf. Ludwig's fast-paced and wacky writing calls to mind Marx Brothers classics, with mistaken identities, slamming doors, over-the-top romantic shenanigans and general mayhem. It's the directorial debut of Carl Bright and can be seen at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday through May 18 at Anchorage Community Theatre, 1133 E. 70th Ave. Tickets are available online at actalaska.org.
