Losing a playoff series opener is rare for Aces

The Alaska Aces lost a Kelly Cup playoff series opener tonight -- Idaho won 1-0 on Gaelan Patterson's goal at 6:09 of extra time, and Josh Robinson's 47 saves -- and that's a rare thing.

According to The Blog's research, the Aces entered the evening having won 12 consecutive series openers -- 11 of them at home -- dating back to 2009.

The last time the Aces lost a series opener was in the 2009 Kelly Cup Finals, when South Carolina beat them 4-2 at Sullivan Arena in a series the Stingrays won in the maximum seven games. They hoisted the Cup after taking Game 7, 4-2, at Sullivan.

With victory tonight, the Steelheads seized home-ice advantage from the Aces, who now face a near must-win situation in Friday's Game 2, and then must win at least one game in Boise, where Games 3-4-5 are scheduled next week.
