Broken water main closes C Street near 15th Avenue

A broken water main closed down C Street between 15th and 16th Avenues Saturday morning, and repairs will keep the street shut until about 6 a.m. Sunday.

Anchorage police sent out an alert about the closure at 4:17 a.m. Saturday. About 9:30 a.m., Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility workers were digging into the asphalt to excavate the pipe, a 10-inch cast-iron water main.

It was not yet clear what caused the break, said Toma Gillen, the lead AWWU worker on the site.

"It's spring, the ground's moving," Gillen said.

Early Saturday afternoon, the utility was replacing the cracked segment, a 12-foot section of pipe. Utility spokesman Chris Kosinski said the city expects the water main to be back in service by late Saturday afternoon, but it would take till early Sunday to repair the road.
