A fire at a Spenard apartment building near midnight Sunday sent two people to the hospital and displaced one person, authorities said.
The extent of injuries to those hospitalized wasn't immediately clear Monday morning.
Someone reported smoke and flames visible from the apartment building in the 1000 block of West 26th Avenue at 11:41 p.m., according to Anchorage Fire Department spokesman Al Tamagni. Nine AFD units responded, and the first crew on scene reported smoke coming from the south side of the building, Tamagni said. "They said there were a lot of occupants evacuating and the fire alarm was sounding."
Initial reports described a visually impaired resident still inside the building, but the man was out and unhurt when Anchorage police arrived, he said.
Much of the damage from the fire was isolated to one apartment, Tamagni said. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
The building, identified as Nicole Apartments on a municipal property database, contains 41 apartments and was built in 1976.
Red Cross of Alaska is providing a hotel room, food and clothing for the one person displaced by the fire, a spokesperson said.
