Pro holds free golf clinics this month at Settlers Bay

Golfers new to the sport or those seeking a few tips to enhance their game can take advantage of a free weekly lessons this month at Settlers Bay Golf Course in Wasilla.

PGA professional Mike Stoltz is holding hourlong clinics for beginner and intermediate players every Sunday in May at 3 p.m. There's no limit on participation and equipment will be supplied, though Stoltz encouraged golfers to bring their own clubs.

To sign up for the clinic, call Stoltz at 354-8442 or Settlers Bay golf shop at 376-6807 and leave a name and contact number. There will be a clinic on Mother's Day, which is Sunday, and all moms play free that day at Settlers.

Stoltz, who owns Meandering Moose Lodging in Talkeetna with his wife, Kathy, has been a golf instructor for more than 35 years.

Chip, drive, putt contest

Young golfers can showcase their skills during the Chip, Drive and Putt Championships at Anchorage Golf Course on June 23. The competition is free and open to kids ages 7 to 15.

Participants hit three chips, three drives and three putts and are awarded points for accuracy and distance. The top three finishers in each division advance to the Aug. 17 sub-regional qualifier in Lacey, Washington.

Meeting set Saturday

The Alaska Junior Golf Association is holding an organizational meeting Saturday at 1 p.m. at Anchorage Golf Course. The youth program is open to all golfers ages 7 to 18 with knowledge of basic rules and ability to play.

The meeting, which is open to all players and parents, is an opportunity to ask questions and see the season's schedule. The first tournament is slated for June 2.
