UAA men's basketball team adds Norwegian star to roster

The UAA men's basketball team added a third international player to its roster Tuesday.

Sjur Berg, a 6-foot-7 forward, will join the Seawolves this fall. He played his senior season of high school basketball at California's Santa Margarita Catholic High, which plays in one of the nation's top high school leagues, UAA coach Rusty Osborne said.

In 2012, Berg played as an amateur in Norway's top league and averaged 8.2 rebounds and 8.5 points per game. In 25 games, he recorded five double-doubles and had a pair of 18-rebound performances.

He also has experience playing against pros in Norway, including UAA's 2004 athlete of the year Peter Bullock.

"Surg has the ability to rebound at a very high level and brings tremendous strength and physical presence," Osborne said in a press release.

Berg, a 225-pounder, had offers from NCAA Division I programs, Osborne said.

Along with Germany's Kalidou Diouf and Australia's Jackson McTier, Berg becomes the third international player on the UAA roster. He is the fourth member of UAA's recruiting class, joining Eastern Arizona College transfer Dom Hunter and freshmen Damien Fulp of Colony and Brian Pearson of Elko, Nev.
