State prepares to close Yukon River to all king salmon fishing

In anticipation of what they say could be the worst king salmon run ever recorded on the Yukon River, officials with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced Monday ( ) they are closing the river to king sportfishing effective May 12 and have plans to close the subsistence fisheries as the fish arrive in each district.

The emergency order, listed under the agency's sportfishing section, also states, "No directed commercial fishery for king salmon or sale of king salmon caught incidentally in other commercial fisheries will be permitted."

The news comes after several years of lackluster runs and a particularly bad forecast for this year.
