The U.S. Department of Commerce is giving $1 million to the Port of Nome to help pay for improvements that will increase port capacity.
Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker announced the award Thursday. The money comes from the department’s Economic Development Administration and will help pay for construction of a dock and ramp, officials said.
“The (grant) will help reinvigorate the Port of Nome and bring more business to the region,” Pritzker said in a statement.
The project is expected to create 10 jobs and attract $700,000 in private investment to the area, the department said.
