Finger Lake State Recreation Site, one of the most popular places in the Valley for residents to get out on the water in the summer, will be closed starting July 15 for the rest of the season.
The Alaska Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation recently announced the closure, which will allow crews to rebuild the entire campground at Finger Lake. The boat launch and day-use area will be closed, officials say, and the road down to the site will be barricaded.
The park gets 30,000 to 35,000 visitors a year, according to park superintendent Wayne Biessel. It also includes the only public boat launch on the lake. Biessel suggested boaters use other lakes after mid-July, including launches on Cottonwood and Wasilla lakes or Lake Lucille.
