A UAF recruit and a UAA recruit combined for the game-winning overtime strike Friday night, when the Fairbanks Ice Dogs opened the NAHL's best-of-3 Robertson Cup with a 5-4 victory over the visiting Austin Bruins.
Forward Tayler Munson, headed to his hometown team UAF in the fall, scored the winning goal five minutes into extra time off an assist from defenseman Wyatt Ege, who is ticketed to join UAA in 2015.
Munson furnished the Ice Dogs two goals and a helper, and a +2 rating. Ege had two assists and went +2. The Ice Dogs also received goals from Jacob Hetz, Hans Gorowsky (+3) and Lonnie Clary. Kevin Aldridge stopped 29 shots for Fairbanks.
Austin, trailing 4-2 in the third period, forced OT on goals from Sam Kauppila and Jay Dickman. Drew Anderson assisted on both goals and finished with one goal and three assists.
The Ice Dogs, who won the Cup in 2011, can seize it Saturday night with a win in Game 2 at the Big Dipper. If necessary, Game 3 is Sunday.
The Ice Dogs delivered the junior circuit's best record in the regular season.
