U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $1 Million to Increase Capacity at the Port of Nome

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker today announced that the Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding $1 million to make critical improvements to the Port of Nome in Alaska. These improvements aim to increase capacity at the port and expand the local maritime industry.

"The Obama Administration is committed to supporting our nation's ports, which play a crucial role in increasing U.S. exports and strengthening our economy," said Secretary Pritzker. "The EDA grant announced today will help reinvigorate the Port of Nome and bring more business to the region."

EDA's investment in the city of Nome will support the construction of a dock and roll-on/roll-off ramp at the Port, which will enable the port to deliver service to a greater number of incoming ships. According to grantee estimates, this project will create 10 jobs and attract roughly $700,000 in private investment to the area.
