Weekend Picks: Markets, creek cleanup, an open house and music

Under the windmill, sweet treats and art at market

Signs of summer are cropping up all over the city, including under the Chilkoot Charlie's windmill. Starting this weekend there will be more than 40 booths from Alaska vendors at the Spenard Farmers Market. Returning vendors include Glacier City Gardener, Woolwood Studios, Foundroot Seeds, Denali Dreams Soap Co., Alaska Gourmet Seafood, MEZ Pottery, Urban Bamboo and more. New vendors include Sweet Steel, with fresh baked goods from Spenard's Illusions Baker and steel garden art by Cindy Shake. 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays through Sept. 27 in the Chilkoot Charlie's parking lot.

Creek cleanup celebration at Cuddy Park today

The snow might be gone but remnants of winter linger on, unfortunately, with all the litter that has accumulated in our parks and waterways. Pitch in and help with the creek cleanup at a celebration Saturday, May 17, at Cuddy Park. There will be fun for prizes, a raffle, educational booths, entertainment and more. Firefighters grill hot dogs, host demo at open house

Fire Station 3 at 1100 Airport Heights Drive is having an open house Saturday. There will be free hot dogs, a live fire burn demo, home exit drill, JBER smoke trailer, kiddie combat challenge, goodie bags and child car seat inspections. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Free parking behind Alaska Regional Hospital. Handicapped parking behind Fire Station 3.

Music group Kidz Bop featured at free concert

If you have a child between the ages of 7 and 14, you may be familiar with the billboard charting music ensemble Kidz Bop. The groups performs child-friendly versions of Top 40 pop songs. Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and Miley Cyrus are among the artists they cover. Kidz Bop will give a free performance at the Dena'ina Center on Sunday, which will be filmed for a commercial promoting the group's next album. Kidz Bop fans and their parents are asked to check in no earlier than 3:30 p.m. Sunday, in the third floor lobby of the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center, 600 W. 7th Ave.
