Memorial Day events in Anchorage, Mat-Su

Fort Richardson National Cemetery

Preliminary music from Glacier Brass and the Midnight Sun Barbershop Chorus will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the ceremony will start at noon. There will be speeches and a wreath-laying ceremony. The event will close with multiple musicians playing taps across the cemetery. 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Building 58-512, Davis Highway, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. (384-7075, www.cem.va.gov).

Delaney Park Strip

Music will begin at 9 a.m. at the flagpole on the Park Strip downtown. Mayor Dan Sullivan, Sen. Mark Begich and Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell will speak, and the names of Alaskans killed in combat will be read. 9 a.m., Delaney Park Strip, Ninth Avenue and I Street.

Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery

American Legion Post 1, Auxiliary, Sons of American Legion and Aurora Borealis Post 21 will host a ceremony at the municipal cemetery, 535 E. Ninth Ave., starting at 11 a.m. at the flagpole. A posting of the flag and speeches will be featured. The event will be followed by a barbecue at Jack Henry Post 1 American Legion, 840 W. Fireweed Lane, with food, games and children's activities. 1-5 p.m. It's free for members; non-members are $8.

Wasilla

A 10:30 procession will start at the Wasilla Post Office and end at the cemetery on Wasilla-Fishhook Road. At 1 p.m., a ceremony will begin at the Veterans' Wall of Honor.

Remembrance Day Ceili

The Irish Cultural Collective will sing songs of remembrance from Ireland and other nations, with live accompaniment and ceili and set dances (similar to contra and square dances). The event commemorates those people and places that are now gone, as well as celebrating life on Memorial Day. 6-10 p.m., The Red Chair Cafe, 337 E. Fourth Ave., South Entrance. Free. (278-7637)

Memorial Day Car Show

The Anchorage Corvette Association car show at the Northway Mall parking lot will mark Memorial Day with a moment of silence at 3 p.m. and a flag presentation. The Corvette Association will accept nonperishable foods for the Armed Services YMCA food bank for local military. Hot dogs will be for sale and a silent auction will raise money to support ASYMCA in Alaska. Show trophies will be given out at 4 p.m. Noon-4 p.m., 3101 Penland Parkway.
