Top high school tracksters to compete in Kodiak

The track and field season gets an epilog Saturday in Kodiak, when top athletes from across the state will compete in the Brian Young Invitational.

The meet will allow head-to-head competition between athletes regardless of school size. That could mean showdowns between the two girls who swept sprint titles at last weekend's state championships at Dimond High. Anchorage Christian's Tanner Ealum and Colony's Peggy Mathis clocked nearly identical times in the 100, 200 and 400, with Ealum running in the Class 1-2-3A division and Mathis in the Class 4 division.

Mathis added the long jump title to her haul to pull off a rarity -- four state titles in four individual events. Her efforts led Colony to the Class 4A team title over Chugiak and Thunder Mountain, which shared second place.
