Anchorage police on Thursday identified a man killed in a Chugiak helicopter crash Wednesday as Tom R. Moore, 62, of Anchorage.
Moore died when the helicopter he was flying crashed at Birchwood Airport. Moore was a longtime helicopter pilot in Alaska and co-owner of Global Positioning Services Inc. a surveying and mapping firm.
A biography listed on the company's website said Moore had 30 years of surveying experience in Alaska. It noted that Moore was a commercial helicopter pilot who maintained a perfect safety rating and extensive experience working in remote areas of Alaska.
National Transportation Safety Board Spokesman Clint Johnson said the wreckage of the crash had been moved from the airport to a secure location in Wasilla where investigators will continue to collect evidence. Representatives from the manufacturers of the helicopter —a Robinson R-44 — will be on hand as well as those from the engine manufacturer, Lycoming.
Johnson said the NTSB will issue preliminary findings early next week.
