NAGRUK HARCHAREK NAMED TO NORTH PACIFIC RESEARCH BOARD
Nagruk Harcharek, UMIAQ Science Logistics Project Manager, has been selected to serve on the North Pacific Research Board's (NPRB) Arctic Advisory Panel for a three-year term. The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) supports peer-reviewed scientific research in the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and Arctic Ocean to inform effective management and sustainable use of marine resources.
The board relies upon input from external reviewers and its science and advisory panels to fund the most meritorious science projects that address pressing fishery management and ecosystem information needs.
For UMIAQ, Harcharek oversees field operations in support of research activities in and near Barrow, Alaska and is a community liaison to local agencies, science and subsistence organizations and visiting researchers, providing scientific logistical support. Growing up in Barrow, he actively participated in spring whaling preparations and hunts and has over 20 years of experience observing weather and ice conditions along with 15 years of experience captaining ocean and river vessels around the greater Barrow area.
Harcharek earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Aeronautical Science in 2009 from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and his Associate of Science Degree in Small Vessel Fabrication and Repair in 2006 from Honolulu Community College.
