Phone call from father leads to Florida man's rescue from ledge near Portage

A 30-year-old Florida man was rescued from a mountain ledge in Portage Valley Sunday after officials in Girdwood received a call from the man's father in Florida, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers said the Girdwood Volunteer Fire Department got a call from a Florida man shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday. The man told officials that his son was stuck on a ledge. O

fficers from the Girdwood Fire Department, the U.S. Forest Service, troopers and volunteers from the Alaska Mountain Rescue group responded, finding that Spencer Rhodes, 30, of Florida, had hiked an avalanche chute and was then prevented from hiking down because of the difficulty of the terrain and a pre-existing medical condition (which troopers did not identify).

The responders were able to reach Rhodes and assist him down the mountain without incident and no one, including Rhodes, was injured, said troopers.
