AROUND THE HORN
WEDNESDAY'S GAMES
Pilots 4, Goldpanners 2
Nate Nolan drove in two runs in the third inning and starter Dylan Nelson threw four shutout innings to lead the Pilots past the longtime rival Goldpanners 4-2 in nonconference action at Mulcahy.
Nolan, a catcher from St. Marys, doubled with the bases loaded to give his team an early 3-0 lead.
Nelson, a righthander from Cal, struck out five but left after four innings, opening the way for Cameron Pongs. Pongs, a lefty from Long Beach State, struck out six in three innings and gave up an unearned run.
Two players delivered two hits apiece for the Goldpanners -- Mike Wieland of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Scooter Bynum, a recent graduate from Monroe Catholic High School in Fairbanks.
Chinooks 9, Miners 4
Jackson Cramer was 3 for 4 with three RBIs in Chugiak's 9-4 conference win over Mat-Su in the Valley.
The first baseman from West Virginia belted a two-run double in Chugiak's four-run sixth inning. The Chinooks grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The Miners mounted a ninth-inning comeback, scoring four runs on two hits and three errors, but Chugiak hung on for its first win of the young season.
Oilers 3, Seals 0
Four Peninsula pitchers combined for a two-hitter and Nolan Sheridan drove in two runs in a 3-0 nonconference win over the San Francisco Seals in Kenai.
Cody Richey got the win with one inning of work in relief of starter Jimmy Nesselt, a right-hander from East Tennessee State who fanned five in five innings.
