Kodiak’s Trevor Dunbar captured fifth place in the 10,000-meter race Wednesday at the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Dunbar is a member of an Oregon team that landed three men in the top eight and produced the race winner — Edward Cheserek, who became the first freshman to win the 10,000 at the national meet since Suleiman Nyambui of UTEP in 1979.
Cheserek won in 28 minutes, 30.18 seconds, recording a 53.31 on the final lap to surge to victory.
Dunbar finished in 28:53.81 and Parker Stinson was eighth for the Ducks in 29:01.39.
Dunbar, who last summer became the first Alaska runner to complete the mile in less than four minutes, will run the 5,000 meters Friday night in Eugene.
