Bowlers clean up at Special Olympics

Alaska's Special Olympic athletes will return Saturday from the national championships with 18 medals, seven of them gold.

Capturing three medals apiece at the Special Olympics USA Games in Princeton, New Jersey, were bowlers Stacey Hall of Fairbanks, who placed first in singles and second in unified doubles and unified team competition, and Mandy Gentleman of Fairbanks, who placed first in unified doubles and second in singles and unified team competition. Their unified partners in doubles and team competition, Pamela Hansen and Valorie Benedetti, also received four medals apiece.

Other gold medalists were golfers Matthew Maillelle and Garrett Stortz of Anchorage and swimmers Myrna Kuchenoff of Homer (100 freestyle) and Elizabeth Broeckel-Berryman of Anchorage (50 free).

Others claiming silver were runner Jacob Brewer of Anchorage in the 200 meters, swimmer Broeckel-Berryman in the 25-yard backstroke and bocce players Jonathan Williams and unified partner Jeremiah Hanks of Ketchikan.
