Anchorage Chamber sets new political debate schedule

The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce has revised its schedule of political debates leading up to the Aug. 19 primary. The changes come after three ballot measures that had been set for August were moved to the Nov. 4 general election and after Sen. Lesil McGuire dropped out of the Republican primary for lieutenant governor.

The Chamber events all start at noon and will be held at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center.

Here's the new list:

• July 14 -- Debate between Sen. Hollis French and Valley teacher Bob Williams, who are running for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor.

• July 21 -- Debate over whether to legalize marijuana, will appear as Ballot Measure 2 in the November election.

• July 28 -- Debate over whether to repeal Senate Bill 21, the oil tax cuts passed in 2013. This referendum will be decided in August as Ballot Measure 1.

• Aug. 11 -- Debate between candidates trying for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. So far Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and Natural Resources Commissioner Dan Sullivan have confirmed they will attend. Fairbanks lawyer Joe Miller has been invited.
