Highland Games at state fairgounds Saturday

The Highland Games will try out a new location this weekend for its annual celebration of all things Scottish.

Usually held in Eagle River, the games are Saturday at the state fairgrounds in Palmer. Gates open at 8 a.m. and activities wrap up with a concert from 7-9 p.m.

All day long, men and women will compete in heavy-weight object throwing — the caber toss, the hammer throw, the stone toss. The kilted mile — all runners must wear kilts, with a limited number available for those who don't have their own — is at 12:30 p.m.

Other activities include piping and drumming competition, scotch tasting, a tug of war and more. Food and crafts will be available for purchase..

Tickets, available at the gate, are $15 for adults and $5 for kids ages 5-16, with discounts for seniors and military.
