Janay DeLoach Soukup, the Eielson High graduate who won bronze in the long jump at the 2012 Summer Olympics, will have a busy day Saturday at the USA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California.
DeLoach Soukup registered a time of 13.0 seconds Friday in the women’s 100-meter hurdles preliminaries to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
The semifinals are at 10 a.m. ADT. At 11:15 a.m., she is scheduled to begin competition in the long jump. Then, if she’s fast enough in the morning hurdles race, she could wind up running in the hurdles finals at 1:52 p.m.
DeLoach Soukup has been a standout long jumper for years — her jump of 19 feet, 5 inches in 2003 remains the Alaska high school record in that event. But in the last two seasons she has started running hurdles, with considerable success — she placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at this year’s World Indoor Championships.
