Man's body washes up on shore of island near Bethel

The body of what appears to be a middle-aged man washed ashore near a family fish camp Wednesday in Western Alaska, radio station KYUK reports.

A caller reported finding the human remains just before 9 p.m. on an island near Bethel, acting police chief Andre Achee told the station. "It was discovered that the body just washed up within the hour of them calling us up, because prior to that there were kids swimming in that area," he said.

Police found no initial signs of foul play and took the remains to the state medical examiner's office to identify the man and determine the cause of death, according to KYUK.
