Trevor Dunbar claimed sixth place in the men’s 5,000 meters Friday night and Janay DeLoach Soukup’s meet ended earlier than she had hoped Saturday at the USA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California.
Dunbar, the Kodiak runner who recently concluded a successful college career at Oregon, finished in 13 minutes, 34.96 seconds. The win went to Bernard Lagat in 13:31.41.
DeLoach Soukup, an Eielson graduate who lives in Colorado, failed to advance to the finals in either the long jump or the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday.
She placed 10th in the long jump — only the top eight advanced to the finals — with a jump of 20 feet, 5 inches in the preliminaries. In the hurdles, she placed fifth in her semifinal heat in 13.05 seconds; the top four in her heat automatically qualified for the finals.
A bronze medalist in long jump at the 2012 Summer Olympics, DeLoach Soukup has been dealing with an ankle injury for much of the last year.
