Fort Wainwright soldier found dead in barracks

A Fort Wainwright soldier was found dead in his barracks room early Thursday morning, according to a press release from U.S. Army Alaska.

Spc. Jason L. McCall, 24, was reportedly found by another soldier after he didn't show up for duty. The base's emergency services pronounced the young soldier dead at 7:09 a.m. on Thursday.

McCall arrived in Alaska in June 2012. He was an infantryman with C Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, which is part of the Army's 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division in Alaska.

McCall was from Brevard, N.C., and he attended basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. He entered the Army in February 2012.

The incident is still under investigation but foul play is not suspected, the press release said.

McCall's family has been notified.

The Army reported that a ceremony will be held at Fort Wainwright for McCall, and a notification for the service will be issued when it's planned.
