Letter: Citizens outnumber city workers; time to see who owns Anchorage

The Anchorage Assembly has been discussing the merits of AO 37, the ordinance put forth by our mayor, which affects the power of municipal unions. We haven’t heard much about it lately but it is likely the unions are quietly working behind the scenes to influence Assembly members in their favor.

This will be on the ballot later this year, hopefully not in a watered down version. If you are a municipal employee it’s not hard to figure out how you’ll vote. If you are a citizen taxpayer who opens your property tax bill every year with trepidation, it is in your interest to express your opinion to your representative and vote.

We citizens outnumber the municipal employees. We can expect to see those with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo be inspired to vote by the union management. This is your chance to decide who owns this city; the union or the citizens.
