Garbage-browsing bear killed in Palmer

Alaska Dispatch News

A Matanuska Valley black bear is dead after spending "a couple of days" rummaging through trash near the Palmer airport, according to a press release from the Department of Fish and Game.

Law enforcement was sent to the neighborhood Monday night.

Fish and Game added that the bear's death should be a reminder for all Alaskans to keep trash inside or in bearproof containers. They also suggest keeping barbecue grills clean, planting gardens in the open away from trails, and taking bird feeders down to keep bears away from residential neighborhoods.

To report a bear incident, call the Department of Fish and Game at (907) 746-6300. If it is causing public safety concerns, contact Alaska State Troopers at (907) 352-5401.
