Sanders, Pelletier retain command in State Am

Greg Sanders shot in the 60s for the second straight day in his bid for a fifth state championship and two former champs made their moves Friday at the Alaska State Amateur golf tournament Friday at Settlers Bay.

Sanders, whose last state title came in 2012, fired a three-under-par 68 to remain in command with a robust eight-stroke lead. Coupled with a 67 on Thursday, the Anchorage man is 7-under par through two rounds at 135.

Vaulting up in the standings were defending champion Adam Baxter of Fairbanks and 2011 champion David Hamilton of Anchorage, the only other golfers who broke 70 on Friday.

Golfers enjoyed good weather for the second straight day at Settlers Bay, where action continues Saturday and Sunday.

Baxter shot a 68 to climb from sixth place to second place with a 143 total. Hamilton shot a 69 to move from 14th place to fourth place at 147. Baxter and Hamilton struggled Thursday, carding 75 and 78, respectively.

In third place is Kevin Daniels at 145, two strokes behind Baxter, two ahead of Hamilton and 10 off the lead.

Rose Pelletier of Palmer continued her steady play to build a 24-stroke lead in the women's championship flight. She shot 78 Friday after an opening-round 74 for a two-round total of 152.

Jeremy Peters kept his grip on the first-flight lead by shooting his second straight round of 80. Four strokes back is James Nunley, who shot Friday's best score in that flight — a 79 — to move into second place at 164.

Juan Botero's round of 88 left him in the second-flight lead with a two-round score of 164.
