Pelletier, Sanders look like locks for State Am golf titles

About the only way Rose Pelletier won't win her first Alaska State Amateur golf championship Sunday is to oversleep and miss her 8:18 a.m. tee time.

And Greg Sanders looks like a lock to seize his fifth men's State Am title.

Pelletier and Sanders own commanding leads in the women's and men's championship flights, respectively, after padding their advantages in Saturday's third round at Settlers Bay.

Pelletier, of Palmer, shot a 5-over 77 to give her a 54-hole total of 229 and a 40-shot cushion over Cathy Shuttleworth (169).

Sanders, of Anchorage, carded a 1-under 70 for his third straight round under par and a three-round total of 205. That delivered him a 12-stroke lead on Kevin Daniels (72 Saturday, 217 total) and a 15-shot bulge on defending champion Adam Baxter (77 Saturday, 220 total).

Pelletier's rounds of 74, 78 and 77 mark the only women's rounds below 80 this week. Par for women at Settlers is 72.

Sanders' rounds of 67, 68 and 70 represent three of the five rounds under par generated by the men's field. Par for men at Settlers is 71. Given the size of his lead, Sanders is unlikely to falter Sunday – he's known for his remarkable consistency.

The final men's group that includes Sanders is scheduled to tee off a 9:39 a.m. Sunday.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Peters continued his metronomic play Saturday in the men's first flight, firing his third consecutive 80 for a 54-hole total of 240 and a 10-shot lead over James Nunley (86 Saturday, 250 total).

Cathy Garrick leads the women's first flight at 272, seven strokes ahead of second-round leader Laura Walsh, after generating an 88 Saturday that tied for the lowest round of the week in that flight.
