AROUND THE HORN
FRIDAY'S GAMES
CHINOOKS SNAP SKID
James Nevant cranked a three-run home run in the eighth inning and closer Tell Taylor worked out of a ninth-inning jam Friday night to help the Chugiak Chinooks beat the visiting Anchorage Bucs at Loretta French Field and snap their five-game losing streak in the Alaska Baseball League.
Taylor entered with one out in the ninth inning and runners on first and third. A stolen base put the runners on second and third, but Taylor struck out the last two Bucs batters to seal the victory.
That made a winner out of reliever Shane Armstrong, who went 3 1/3 scoreless innings and surrendered three hits.
GOLDPANNERS SWEEP OILERS
Jacob Hayes and Kris Paulino each homered Friday night to spearhead the Fairbanks Goldpanners' 11-6 victory over the Peninsula Oilers and wrap up a five-game sweep of the visitors at Growden Park.
Hayes went 2 for 4, drove in five runs and stole a base. Paulino drove in three runs.
Every Fairbanks batter delivered at least one of the team's 12 hits and every Peninsula batter generated at least one of that club's 15 hits. Six different Oilers had two hits, Drake Zarate drove in three runs and Jordan Sanford drove in two runs.
The Goldpanners outscored the Oilers 50-19 in the series.
