Sanders, Pelletier capture state golf titles

Greg Sanders and Rose Pelletier capped wire-to-wire victories in the Alaska state amateur golf tournament Sunday by shooting par in the final round at Settlers Bay.

The championship was the fifth for Sanders and the first for Pelletier.

Both blew away the competition over four days of competition at the golf course near Wasilla.

Sanders, of Anchorage, fired an even-par 71 in the final round to finish with an 18-stroke victory over Kevin Daniels.

Sanders posted a 72-hole total of 276 that included rounds of 67, 68, 70 and 71. Each round he carded the best score of the day.

Pelletier, of Palmer, shot her best round of the tournament, a 72. Previous rounds of 74, 78 and 77 helped her forge a stunning 55-stroke win over Cathy Shuttleworth.

Daniels earned second place among men by holding off David Hamilton by one stroke. Daniels shot 77 Sunday for a 294 total, and Hamilton finished with a 74 that left him at 295.
