FRIDAY'S GAMES

BUCS SMOKE PILOTS

Four walks and a grand slam propelled the Bucs to a fast start in their 8-1 romp over the Glacier Pilots in Friday's late game at the annual Major League Baseball/Alaska Baseball League Showcase at Mulcahy Stadium.

The Bucs led 6-0 after a big first inning. Pilots starter Bernardo Flores walked two batters before getting the first out with a strikeout, and then walked two more to help bring in the Bucs' first run. That brought up Evan Powell, who blasted a grand slam for a 5-0 lead. After getting the second out, Flores gave up two more hits and allowed a sixth run to score on a wild pitch.

The game was one of three Friday at Mulcahy, where a number of MLB scouts gathered to check out this season's talent in the ABL.

CHUGIAK WINS AGAIN

Chugiak rolled to its fourth straight win by stopping the Peninsula Oilers 7-4 at Mulcahy.

Mark Lindsay sparked the Chinooks with four RBIs, an effort highlighted by a two-run single in the fifth inning, which Chugiak put up four runs. Lindsay had two hits and Jonathan Popadics had three.

Jake Sandlin led the Oilers with three hits.

A two-out, unearned run in the top of the final inning carried the Goldpanners to a 2-1 win over the Mat-Su Miners at Mulcahy.

Jacob Hayes reached second base with a single and an error by shortstop Terence Connelly and scored from there on Mike Wieland's double.

Three Mat-Su pitchers combined for five no-hit, shutout innings but Matthew Decker, the fourth pitcher, was touched for three hits in two innings and was burned by the error.
