AK Beat: Traffic backs up on Seward Highway due to accident, rock slide

Rockslide, accident hinder traffic on Seward Highway: As thousands of Alaskans returned from weekend recreation on the Kenai Peninsula Sunday afternoon, an accident near the community of Indian between Anchorage and Girdwood closed the northbound lane of the busy Seward Highway. A rockslide earlier in the day also impeded traffic on the road. According to Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Beth Ipsen, a call reporting the three-vehicle accident in the northbound lane came in around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, with one person "possibly" suffering minor injuries in the incident. The northbound lane was closed down while emergency vehicles responded to the accident, and Ipsen encouraged motorists to check the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities traveler information page for updates on when the road might reopen. Meanwhile, DOT had also responded to a rockslide around mile 115 of the highway earlier in the day, which was initially reported around 10:30 a.m. and encroached on the northbound lane.

Hatchet injury leads to medevac from Crow Pass Trail: Alaska State Troopers reported in a dispatch Sunday that a man had been airlifted from Crow Pass Trail after injuring himself with a hatchet. According to the dispatch, 21-year-old Connor Michael had already injured himself when another hiker, a doctor, came upon him on the trail and provided assistance. The doctor also contacted authorities around 8:30 p.m. Saturday using a satellite communication device, which spurred a LifeMed flight to respond to the area. Michael was taken to an Anchorage hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries shortly after 10 p.m., according to troopers.
