Prize concert
Flutist (and former East High track star) Ceylon Narvelle Mitchell II, the Anchorage Festival of Music's 2014 Young Alaskan Artist Award winner, will present his award recital at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 3900 Wisconsin St. Accompanied by Juliana Osinchuk, Mitchell will present pieces by Bach, Debussy, Doppler and Reinecke. He recently earned a master's degree in music education at Boston University and will soon leave town again to pursue further graduate studies at the University of Maryland. Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $10 for students and children. A portion of the proceeds goes to the festival's ongoing scholarship award program.

Spirited song
The African Children's Choir is touring Alaska this month, singing popular children's songs, spirituals and gospel music. The programs are all free, though donations will be accepted to help fund educational and charity programs in seven African countries. Here's the list of area performances.

Willow tour
Artists in the Willow area will be opening their studios to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16. Pick up a map with directions at Willow Creek Studio and Art Gallery, Mile 69.5 Parks Highway. Artists welcoming the public include Bonnie Church (glass), Carol Goltz (pottery, knitting), Susan Whiton (spinning) and Jamie West (spinning and metalwork). The Gallery will also have a variety of work by other creatives from the vicinity, including painting and wood carving. The event is free.
