Service holds off East in tennis opener

Service 5, East 4

Abigail McDiffett and Morgan Rice delivered girls singles victories for East, but a forfeit in girls doubles cost the Thunderbirds a shot at victory Wednesday in a Cook Inlet Conference season-opening tennis meet against Service.

Service, which took wins in four of the five doubles matches, including one by forfeit, won the meet 5-4. The Cougars missed a shot at sweeping the doubles match, but the East team of Ari Hinrichs and Olivia Grant pulled out a 7-6, 6-2 win in mixed doubles event, one of the day's closest matches.

McDiffett registered the only 6-0, 6-0 win of the meet.

Dimond 6, Chugiak 3

Abby Stahl and Tian Ah You won a 10-8 girls doubles tiebreaker to help Dimond grab a 6-3 win over Chugiak in the season-opening meet Wednesday at West.

Cole Fox and Alex Ahn both posted 6-0, 6-0 boys singles victories for the Lynx.

Defending CIC girls doubles champions Katie Brown and Alli Haynes opened the new season with a convincing victory Wednesday in West's 9-0 win over Eagle River.

Brown and Haynes didn't lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Eagle River's Tess Hopkins and Kaitlin Bernhardt.
