The two runners who dominated last year's high school cross country resumed their winning ways Saturday at the Tsalteshi Invitational at Skyview Middle School.
Defending Class 4A state champions Allie Ostrander of Kenai and Levi Thomet of Kodiak earned victories in the 5-kilometer race. Ostrander blew away the competition, winning by more than two minutes, but Thomet got a bit of a push from Chugiak's Ty Jordan and Kenai's Jonah Theisen.
Thomet won in 15 minutes, 41.4, more than 10 seconds ahead of Jordan (15:53.2) and Theisen (15:56.1).
Ostrander, whose time of 16:44.3 would have placed her 15th among the boys, overwhelmed the field in the girls race. Briahna Gerlach of Glennallen, the winner of the Class 1-2-3A state title last year, was second in 18:50.4, followed by Colony's Jill Bowker in 18:56.5.
Bowker and fourth-place Alex Mathis helped Colony claim the girls title. In the boys team competition, West put four runners in the top 20 to edge Kodiak by a single point.
The Tsalteshi Invitational, which attracted more than a dozen schools and hundreds of runners, is an old meet with a new name. It used to be the Skyview Invitational, named for the high school that hosted it, but the high school became a middle school this year, so the meet took on the name of the Tsalteshi Trail system, where the races are held.
