Alaska Dispatch News

With five returning runners who played in the top 20 at last year's conference meet, Great Northwest Athletic Conference cross-country coaches predict UAA will seize a fifth straight men's title.

Coaches gave UAA eight of 10 first-place votes for 80 points. Western Washington received the other two first-place votes and totaled 73 points.

Meanwhile, coaches gave UAA's women, who have won five straight GNAC titles, the highest number of first-place votes with four, yet picked the Seawolves to finish fourth. Seattle Pacific, which earned three first-place votes, and Simon Fraser, which earned one, each topped the poll with 69 points. Western Washington, with two first-place votes, received 68 points and is picked to finish third and UAA, with 64 points, slotted into fourth.

UAA swept the men's and women's titles last weekend at the University of Hawaii Hilo Invitational.

UAA's men currently are ranked No. 2 in the NCAA West Region behind Chico State.

UAA's women are ranked seventh in the region.
