Yearning for old-school life lessons

Just about every day or so there is news of a shooting, stabbing, abuse, violence, robbery, etc. Police are called and often their orders are not respected and they get blamed for police brutality.

I'm from the old school. Mothers were always home and parents taught their children from the cradle to adulthood to love thy neighbor and live in peace, honesty, truthfulness and to respect people and the law. Work hard, keep busy and make the parents proud.

If everyone would show respect and obey the law, "what a wonderful world this would be."

Unity ticket a historic, gutsy move

Walker-Mallott is a superticket we can vote for. We think it is an incredible show of concern for all Alaska citizens for these individuals to suspend rigid party beliefs to do the right thing for all people in our state. Our compliments to Hollis French and Craig Fleener for also giving up their ambitions to make a stronger supportive ticket. We believe this is an historic event and elevates Alaska in the eyes of political thought.

It is unfortunate that Gov. Parnell has to take jabs at their endeavor but we don't think he impressed many people in our state when he turned down Medicaid for more than 12,000 needy people. Thank you again, to all four gentlemen for thinking of Alaskans first and acting like true gentlemen.

Taxpayers shouldn’t fund children's meals

I read in Time magazine recently that it costs on average $245,000 to raise a child until they're 18. I never had kids. I knew I was not willing to give so much of my time and money and energy, my choice. If you choose to have kids, your choice. But I don't think everybody else should have to pay to raise them. That some students are supplied three meals a day to me is just not right. Whatever happened to "if ya can't feed em, don't breed em"?

If you want to help pay for those kids' meals, feel free to donate. But why should I go to work each day and have my pay feed somebody else's kids?

I bet if they were followed around with a video camera, we'd see a lot of money they and their parents misspent. Enough of taking my hard-earned dollars to pay to feed your kids.

‘Letters’ is no place for political ads

To Ms. Santerre, chair of Alaska Republican Party District 12:

It seems as if you aren't much of a fan of Sen. Mark Begich (ADN, Wednesday), and I have a sneaking suspicion that your political affiliation and position have something to do with that. After billions of TV ads and an equally countless number of radio spots, I could have guessed the contents of your letter word for word.

Please, I'm begging party leaders on both sides of the aisle, please keep the self-righteous vitriol and aggressive rhetoric out of ADN letters. If you have something constructive to say about your opponent's political ads, then I'll vote for you. That is my only criterion for our candidates, but I still don't expect to cast a vote come November.

Campaigns just look for ammunition

Back in the 1970s I edited the weekly newspaper The Susitna Sentinel out of Talkeetna. We looked for information that people could use to make good decisions. In the 1980s, we did the same when I shot news for ABC and CBS. Now the television, especially, looks only for ammunition to throw at the other side. It's all driven by money: the folks with the biggest wallet pay for the biggest salvos to be fired at the enemy.

Democracy is being buried under the debris of weapons of mass distortion, paid for by minions of mass confusion.
