Anchorage police identify victim in fatal vehicle-pedestrian accident

Anchorage Police identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle late Tuesday night as 36-year-old Arthur Mike.

Mike was pronounced dead at the scene after he was hit by a Chevy Suburban around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday near the Ben Boeke Ice Arena on Gambell Street, the Anchorage Police Department wrote in a news release.

Anchorage resident Nita Akpik, 29, drove the SUV. Akpik was traveling southbound on Gambell Street when the SUV struck Mike in the roadway, the statement said.

"Akpik was cooperative and remained on the scene as police were called," police said.

Police were waiting for toxicology tests to determine if alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident. No charges had been filed Wednesday.

On Aug. 29, a woman was hit by a BMW sedan in nearly the same location on Gambell Street. She had stepped into the northbound lane close to the Cal Worthington car dealership when struck and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

In the news release Wednesday, police wrote, "This deadly crash is a good reminder for us all to cross the street in a designated cross walk area with the appropriate signal indicating it is safe to do so."
