AK Beat: Suspect sought in Anchorage stabbling

Suspect in brothers' stabbing sought: Anchorage police say two men were injured in a stabbing on a South Anchorage bike trail Friday night, one critically. The incident occurred about 10:15 p.m. near 88th Avenue and the Old Seward Highway. Joshua and Justin Toliver, who police described as 22-year-old twin brothers, were walking on the bike trail with one other person when they encountered a group of "young teens," and a verbal fight turned physical, police said in a Saturday statement. Both brothers were stabbed in the fight, police said. Justin Toliver was stabbed in the abdomen and upper torso and has been hospitalized in critical condition, police said. His brother was cut on his hand and hip, and he was treated and released. One of the brothers told police that they knew some of the members of the group but didn't know the person who did the stabbing, according to the police statement. The group of teens scattered when police arrived, the statement said. Police were able to stop and identify witnesses, but the suspect remains at large, the statement said. Detectives are continuing to investigate. Anyone with further information on the case is asked to call Anchorage police at 786-8900.

Witness recalls fatal polar bear attack: One of the leaders of a 2011 student expedition trip to Norway during which one of the young travelers was killed by a polar bear has shared his account of the terrifying experience. In a first-person essay in The Guardian, Andy Ruck describes his "fragmented, illogical, surreal" memories of the morning he awoke to find a polar bear attacking the camp Ruck shared with another adult leader and 11 teenagers. "I remember its jaws round my head, its teeth in my skull, the sound of the cracking of bones, the blow to my left eye," Ruck writes. "I felt no pain, no fear, just a clear realisation that I was about to meet an unlikely and untimely death." Ruck was severely mauled in the attack, in which three others were injured and 17-year-old Horatio Chapple was killed.
