Assembly delays decision on Chugach State Park access plan

After a lengthy public hearing, the Anchorage Assembly voted Tuesday night to push back a decision on whether to approve a comprehensive document dealing with access issues in Chugach State Park.

The 11-member body voted unanimously to take up the Chugach Access Plan at its next meeting on Oct. 7. Assembly member Bill Starr proposed the postponement, saying he wanted more time to work on amendments.

More than 40 people testified Tuesday night, the large majority in support of the goals of the plan, a comprehensive document describing current access into Chugach State Park and creating a legal framework for possible future access.

The plan has drawn strong support from a broad range of the Anchorage community, including mountaineering groups and park officials. But it has also drawn vocal opposition from homeowners worried about issues including increased traffic on rural roads and infringement on private property rights.
